    Tax Services in Kenya FAQ

When should I register for a tax obligation in Kenya?

You should register for a tax obligation immediately your business or income activity triggers it. As a leading tax consultants firm in Kenya, we advise:

    • KRA PIN: Immediately after business registration or before employment
    • VAT Obligation: Within 30 days when your annual turnover hits KES 5 Million
    • PAYE: Immediately when you employ your first employee
    • Withholding Tax: When you start paying rent, management fees, royalties or dividends
    • Turnover Tax (TOT): When your annual turnover is between KES 1M – 25M
    • Rental Income Tax: When you start earning rental income

Registering late attracts a KES 20,000 penalty per obligation. At Anziano Consultants, we register all obligations within 24 hours.

Yes, 100% mandatory. Any foreigner or non-resident doing business, working, buying property, opening a bank account, or applying for a work permit in Kenya MUST have a Non-Resident Taxpayer KRA PIN.

As a tax consultants firm in Kenya authorized to represent non-residents, we handle:

    • Foreigner / Non-Resident KRA PIN registration using passport
    • Requirement of a licensed KRA tax agent to act as tax representative
    • KRA PIN for Digital Service Tax (DST) and Significant Economic Presence

You cannot get a work permit, business permit, or open a company bank account without KRA PIN. Contact us and we process it in 2-3 days.

Yes, if you have a KRA PIN and are tax resident or have Kenya-sourced income.

    • Tax Resident Foreigners: If you live in Kenya for 183 days or more in a year, you must file Individual Income Tax Return like any Kenyan, even on worldwide income.
    • Non-Resident Foreigners: You must file returns if you have income sourced in Kenya – e.g., employment income, business income, rental income, consultancy fees.
    • Nil Returns: Even with no income, you must file nil returns to avoid KES 2,000 penalty.

Our tax consultants firm in Kenya manages monthly and annual filing for expatriates, foreign directors, and non-resident investors, including DTA relief claims so you don’t pay tax twice.

Deadlines are strict and enforced by KRA iTax system:

    • Individual Income Tax: 30th June every year [for Jan-Dec previous year]
    • Corporate / Company Income Tax: Within 6 months after your year-end
    • VAT: 20th of the following month
    • PAYE, Withholding Tax, Rental Income Tax: 9th of the following month
    • Turnover Tax (TOT): 20th of the following month
    • Instalment Tax: 4 instalments – 20th of 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th month of your accounting year

Late filing penalty is KES 2,000 for individuals and KES 20,000 for companies, plus 5% penalty and 1% monthly interest on tax due. Our firm sets up automatic reminders so you never miss a deadline.

Ignoring KRA notices is the most expensive mistake you can make. As an experienced tax consultants firm in Kenya, we have seen KRA take the following actions:

    1. Default Assessment: KRA will assess tax on your behalf, usually 3-5 times higher than your actual liability
    2. Agency Notices: KRA will freeze your bank accounts and instruct your bank to pay KRA directly
    3. PIN Deactivation: Your KRA PIN is blocked, you cannot transact, get TCC, or transfer property
    4. Travel Ban & Property Caveat: KRA can issue departure prohibition orders and place caveats on your land
    5. Penalties & Interest: 5% immediate penalty, 1% monthly interest, and up to 200% tax fraud penalty
    6. Prosecution: Tax evasion is a criminal offense punishable by fine and imprisonment

If you receive a KRA notice, DO NOT ignore it. You have 30 days to file an objection. Forward it to us immediately at info@anzianoconsultants.com  or Whats App US and we will file a proper objection and represent you.
